SunCache is an inexpensive solar water heating (SWH) system for residential applications in Sunbelt locations.
This promising new technology is the result of a nine year, $2 million R&D program supported by the U.S. Department of Energy.
SunCache uses plastic material extensively to reduce copper and aluminum content and keep system prices low.
SunCache is a passive system, which means that it uses no pumps or controls to eliminate parasitic losses and maximize reliability. It is the only passive system certified with PEX piping, improving freeze-resistance substantially and simplifying installation.
SunCache is an Integrated/Collector Storage (ICS) type system, which means that the collector also provides thermal storage. No interior space is consumed for a storage tank.
SunCache has a streamlined installation process that requires as little as four man-hours. Sold as a complete system, the installer provides only PEX piping and a tempering valve. Little or no soldering is required, making it a good choice for the do-it-yourselfer.
SunCache has completed an exhaustive testing and development program to identify and correct any design weaknesses. Testing included both accelerated laboratory testing and instrumented field testing. More than 250 panels have been molded. More than 50 pre-production systems were installed and all are working flawlessly. The first system was installed in 2002.
SunCache has attained OG-300 certification from the Solar Rating and Certification Corporation, a prerequisite for most incentive programs including the 30% federal renewable energy tax credit.
SunCache is compatible with both new construction and retrofit installations.
SunCache is made in Sacramento, with suppliers in both Northern and Southern California. At this time, Harpiris Energy is focusing SunCache marketing efforts in California.
SunCache is covered by U.S. Patent number 6,814,070, which is the property of Davis Energy Group. Davis Energy developed SunCache with support from the U.S. Department of Energy and the National Renewable Energy Laboratory. Harpiris Energy has secured an exclusive international licensing agreement with DEG authorizing usage of the SunCache intellectual property.
